Pickleball is often seen as a sport that is particularly suitable for older people, and that is true - but it is much more than that. Pickleball appeals to all age groups and offers a suitable introduction for everyone, from children to senior citizens. In this article, we look at why pickleball is equally attractive and accessible for children, adults and seniors alike.
Pickleball for kids - easy to get started, instant fun
Pickleball is an ideal sport for children, and we have seen this more than clearly this year in Switzerland. We are proud to say that over 2,000 children have already taken part in our pickleball events and activities - whether at sports days in schools, sports camps or major events such as the UBS Kids Cup or SlowUp in Valais. We were able to organize many of the events together with the Swiss Pickleball Association (Swiss pickleball umbrella organization) organize. The success speaks for itself, as 99% of the children are immediately enthusiastic and enjoy the game from the very first minute.
But why is pickleball so popular with children? The answer lies in the simplicity of the game and the easy-to-learn rules. The paddles (rackets) are light and therefore easy for small hands to hold, the ball is light and easy to control, the net is low and the court is relatively small. These factors make the game feel more accessible than other backstroke sports such as tennis or badminton. Tennis can be challenging and expensive for many children, and badminton doesn't allow you to use the shuttle to do drills like juggling - all of this is eliminated with pickleball, making it a perfect beginner sport for the youngest.
Pickleball is also versatile and allows children to be creative. They can juggle, bounce, practice tricks and have the opportunity to be physically active in a safe and fun environment, which has a positive effect on health and hand-eye coordination.

Pickleball for seniors - a healthy, gentle workout with a fun factor
Pickleball has established itself as one of the fastest growing sports for seniors in the U.S., and for good reason. Here are some reasons why pickleball is an excellent choice for older people in particular:
- Gentle movement: Pickleball uses fewer joints and muscles than many other sports. The smaller court and lightweight rackets make the movements smoother, which reduces the risk of injury.
- Moderate load: Pickleball is less intense than tennis or padel, for example, which makes it accessible to people with limited mobility or lower fitness levels. Nevertheless, it is a great cardiovascular workout that strengthens the heart and circulation and promotes mobility.
- Social experience: The pickleball community is another advantage. It is easy to find fellow players, which promotes social ties and enjoyment of the game. The social aspect is particularly important for senior citizens to keep fit and mentally active.
- Promotes cognitive skills: Studies show that backstroke sports such as pickleball train spatial thinking, reaction time and strategic skills - all aspects that are important in old age. It therefore not only benefits the body, but also the mind.

Pickleball for 16 to 40-year-olds - dynamics, precision and a sporting challenge
For younger adults, pickleball also offers an exciting mix of speed, precision and fitness. In this age group, the game often develops into a faster and more intense sport that is also technically demanding. Here are the main reasons why pickleball is also attractive for younger players:
- High fitness factor: Depending on the intensity, pickleball can be a strenuous workout that promotes endurance, agility and coordination. It's a great way to keep fit and have a lot of fun at the same time. If playing doubles is not sporty enough for you, you are either too slow or can try your hand at singles. Feedback welcome 🙂
- Competitive challenge: Pickleball offers plenty of scope to improve technically and strategically. From serving, stacking and lobs to positioning, there are many techniques that make the game exciting time and time again. The ambition to constantly improve and compete with others makes pickleball a real sporting challenge.
- Accessibility and flexibility: Pickleball is uncomplicated and can be played almost anywhere - in parking lots, playgrounds or gyms with mobile nets. This flexibility makes it possible to enjoy the game anywhere and at any time. New courts are also being built at a rapid pace in Switzerland. We expect the supply of fixed pickleball courts to look completely different in two years' time!

It is also interesting to note that pickleball is now attracting more and more celebrities. Stars such as Taylor Swift, Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Steffi Graf have long been fans of the sport, and even Roger Federer has already tried pickleball.
